Frequently Asked Questions

1.
What is Barrier-Bac?

Barrier-Bac is a plastic vapor retarder applied under concrete slabs to prevent moisture from migrating into the building.

2.
What are the benefits of using Barrier-Bac products?

Barrier-Bac prevents mold from entering slabs, reducing the risks involved with inhabitants’ health and reducing the cost associated with “repairing” mold growth. You can click Product Benefits to get more information.

3.
What is the difference between Barrier-Bac and other vapor retarders/barriers?

Barrier-Bac vapor retarder products are cross-laminated during manufacturing. The exclusive patented process offers high puncture resistance and very low permeance. By using proprietary polyolefin resins, the life expectancy of our vapor retarder is more than 100 years. The ribbed surface of Barrier-Bac produced in this process provides overall strength to the membrane and enhances concrete adhesion. Barrier-Bac also creates a mechanical interface that, when overlapped and sealed, locks the film in place and reduces shifting.

4.
I’ve heard of people using visqueen sheet, why should I use Barrier-Bac instead?

Standard visqueen sheet is manufactured from reprocessed and reground plastics. Membranes made using these reprocessed resins have very little chemical resistance and will puncture easily and degrade over time.

The only standards that visqueen sheet must meet are weights and measures. 4 mil, 6mil and 10 mil visqueen sheets do not meet ASTM E 1745 Class A standards.

5.
Do Barrier-Bac products meet any required standard?

Yes, Barrier-Bac products not only exceed all eight tests required for the American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM E 1745 Class A specification but also meet the requirements of American Concrete Institute ACI 302.1R-04.

6.
How is Barrier-Bac’s Patented Production Process unique?

Barrier-Bac is made of IntePlus® XF the incredibly strong and high performing, co-extruded, cross-laminated XF film.

The cross-laminated film has to go through a stretching process in different directions, so the molecules of the final products are isotropically oriented. This process highly enhances the strength of the film. Find out more, please visit Patented Process section.

7.
Do you have your own production plant?

Yes, we do. Some companies only market and sell products produced by unknown manufacturers on private label basis. We manufacture and stand behind our own product.

Established in 1991, our IntePlus® XF cross film plant is located in Lolita, Texas along with eight other Inteplast plants. This plant has achieved ISO 9001:2000 Certification. You can click Plant to see more details about our plant.

8.
What is ISO 9001:2000 Certification? Why is it important to the product?

ISO 9001 is by far the world’s most established quality framework, currently being used by over ¾ million organizations in 161 countries.

ISO 9001 specifies requirements for a quality management system. It includes processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

ISO 9001 certification becomes a driving force for Barrier-Bac products to continuously improve quality and conform to customer’s requirements.

9.
What are Barrier-Bac Composite products?

Barrier-Bac Composite products are our vapor retarders with non-woven geo-textile lamination. With the extra lamination, these products provide a mechanical bond with concrete when placed with geo-textile facing concrete pour. This bond greatly improves slab protection from moisture migration by maintaining tight contact with the slab; especially in projects involved expansive soils. Please click VBC-350 for more details.

10.
What types of projects are Barrier-Bac Composite products recommended for?

We suggest using Barrier-Bac Composite products for projects involved expansive soil conditions; void formed slab and high water table. It is also suggested for projects requiring extra cushion protection.
